"Exploring Encaustic"
In the two day workshop we delve deeply into the medium of encaustic, a painting medium dating back to 300 B.C. and practiced by the Greeks and Romans in Egypt and elsewhere. Encaustic is a painting medium whose raw ingredients are beeswax, damar resin, and pigment. This medium is warmed on a hot palette and then fused with heat. Whether used in mixed media or alone, the encaustic surface produced is one of permanence and great tactile beauty.
The workshop will provide a basic understanding of the technique, safe studio practices, making encaustic medium, making paint and setting up a home studio. We will also cover topics of supports and preparation, fusing, and demonstrations of a wide variety of painting, layering, collage, image transfer, monotype, and mixed media techniques using photographs and drawings.
Material included are paints, brushes, towels, palettes, heat guns and torches as well as and other tools used for scribing and scraping. The studio is well-equipped for experimentation with many techniques.
You will need to supply your own boards. Any rigid ungessoed support will do. Binders and Dick Blick have a good selection of unfinished boards in their canvas and board departments as well as Ampersand Encaustibords and Claybord. I prefer using the Ampersand boards but you may use any brand boards including plywood from your local hardware supply store cut to size. Cradled boards are easier to use too. Five-8 X 10 boards will be sufficient. If you like to work larger you may do so. You may order encaustic supplies from R & F Paints and you will find helpful information on their site as well. I will supply practice boards. Bring your own papers, photographs, and collage materials if you wish. ***When you register, I will send you a PDF or Word syllabus of the workshop and a suggested supply list.
